What Causes Brown Discharge From Mouth?

i have been to visit my 94 yr old neighbour in hospital and this brown gooey stuff coming from her mouth i called a nurse they took her blood pressure then i heard them say about oxygen when i ask the doctor what is it she said it could be something she had eaten i said she had not eaten for days thats why she was on a drip do you know what it could mean thanks

Hello,

It might be a regurgitation of stomach content. It has to be sucked out properly because it might enter the lungs and might cause serious complications like aspiration pneumonia. If secretion persists, better to insert a Ryles tube.
