What Causes Brown Discharge From Vagina And Delay In Period?

Hello, My girlfriend a couple weeks ago had brown discharge for a couple of days. She expected her period 2 days ago and she said she had the symptoms of a period except there was no blood, today she had alot of brown discharge. We never actually had sex but we have been close, we took an HPT and it came out negative, do you know what this could be?
