What Causes Brown Discharge?

I am trying to get pregnant and 2 days before my period was due to begin I started having some slight discharge that has gotten darker. I am now having brown/black blood with a little of red blood now. Is there any chance I am pregnant and if not, why is the blood discolored? I have a very regular period normally and am 36 years old.
