What Causes Brown Slimy Discharge During Periods?

Hi, my name is Kiersten and I am a 22 years old. I am roughly 5-6 days late on my period but have been experiencing purple/brown slimy discharge since earlier today. My husband and i have been using condoms, one did break though. I have not taken a pregnancy test. I am usually on the ball, period same time every month. I am also experiencing open sores in my mouth, I was just wondering if they could be related?
