What Causes Brown Spotting In Between Periods?

Hi. I have been having a very dark brown spotting issue in between my period for the past 2 months. I've had pregnancy tests -negative and had fibroids removed. My ob gyn has suggested birth control pills, but I don't want to take them because my husband and I are trying to get pregnant. Any idea what else it could be? Are there any other tests I can request?
