What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge After Having Protected Sex?

Two days ago me and my boyfriend had sex for the first time. Last time I had sex was about 3 months ago. My boyfriend was a bit more rough then I ve had before. Today I noticed a light brown discharge with a slight smell, is this something I should be worried about? We did use a condom, but the first one broke, but before he had his release. I am on birth control but hadn t taken it that night.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Mild irritation to the cervix or vaginal canal can cause light bleeding or brownish discharge after sex. Some women can experience brownish discharge before periods or ovulation. Any foul smelling or curdy vaginal discharge may indicate bacterial or fungal infections which needs to be treated with antibiotics.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
