What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge And Back Pain?

I have been having brown discharge for 4 days instead of my period. I put a tampon in the first day and there was a little red on it but when I changed it and took it out 6 hours later, there was nothing on it. Just brown has been coming out since then. And I have lower back pain. What is going on?
