What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge Before And After Menstruation?

I had brown discharge almost 3 weeks before my period and continued to have it on after. I went a week without any and now I have both brown and white discharge. My next period is in 2 weeks and I'm on birth control (fyi-consistent taker), what is going on?
