What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge Before And During Periods?

hi im 26 y/o and i had brown vaginal discharge, non foul smelling about a week before my expected period which resolved.however during my expected period i had brown vaginal discharge again with 2 episodes of very scant blood tinged mucus.what could have caused this?
