What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge Despite Taking Contraceptive Pill?

Hi. My husband and I had a malfunction with a condom the night of May 7th. I took a morning after pill about 10 hours later. Today (May 17th) I experienced brown discharge. I am not sure if this is side effects from the pill or implanting. My period is not due until the 25th of this month.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
What you have done is right to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
Morning-after-pill is an emergency contraceptive pill. It needs to be taken within 72 hours after an unprotected intercourse. Earlier it is taken, protection seems to be better.
It prevents pregnancy from happening by causing breakthrough bleeding within 3 weeks from the day of its intake. Thus, your period date could alter accordingly.
In the meantime, some of the symptoms like vaginal discharge and intermittent spotting could be considered as normal, as it can happen before the bleeding takes place.
In case bleeding in the form of periods does not happen by 3 weeks, you need to take urine pregnancy test and seek medical attention promptly.
The failure rate with use of such pills is 10 to 15%.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
