What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge Despite Using Contraceptive Pill After Sex?

Hi! I'm 19 years old and I'm on the mini pill Nora-be because I'm currently breastfeeding. I gave birth on Jan 9th and started taking the pill after my 6 weeks follow up appointment at the ob/gyn (Feb 20th). After that my period has been really irregular. In March I got my period 3 times and on March 29th I missed a pill. I got my period on the next day (it was lighter than usual) so I started taking the pill again. I did what I read in the leaflet and did not have unprotected sex for the following 48 hours. After that I only had a couples of days of brown discharge on April 10th and 11th and today (April 20th) I had minimum bleeding ( not even enough for panty liner) and the brown discharge showed up again. I took a home pregnancy test yesterday and it came back negative. Should I worry about pregnancy? Could I have something serious or is brown discharge normal on mini pills?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic Forum.
I have gone through your Query & I really appreciate your concern about the problem you are facing.

As a physician I would like to tell you that Nora-BE is a hormonal contraceptive pill and thus it causes fluctuations in your menstrual cycle rhythms. Also, Your periods may be irregular, or heavier/lighter than usual. You may also have vaginal bleeding (spotting) between periods. Do not stop taking your pills if this happens.

Pregnancy is more likely if you miss pills, start a new pack late, or take your pill at a different time of the day than usual. If you miss a pill, or take it 3 or more hours later than usual, or have diarrhea, or vomit soon after taking a pill, use a back-up method of birth control (such as condoms, spermicide) every time you have sex for the next 48 hours.

You need to take another UPT after 8-10 days to be 100% sure that you are not pregnant.

Thanks for Trusting & Posting your Query on this forum.
Hope this will help you. Feel free to ask any further question.
Have a nice Day.

Regards,
Dr.Abhijeet
