What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge During Periods?

My girlfriend has experienced some rather unusual things during her last period. First day bleeding was heavy, second day very light. Third day barely anything. But on the third day her discharge was a brown coloration. What could possibly be the cause of that?

Hi, I think it can be due to some infections or may be some stress factor. Get her examined by a gynecologist. She may need some antibiotics. If there is history of unprotected intercourse in past few days, do a urine pregnancy test at home to rule out any pregnancy.
