What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge While On Nuvaring?

Hello, I’ve been taking the birth control pill for about six months now and last month I switched to nuvaring. It’s been in for about two weeks and I started to get excessive dark brown discharge which today turned into bleeding. Is this normal? I’m sexually active and don’t want kids so I want to make sure the nuvaring is working properly and I’m not at risk of getting pregnant.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The Nuvaring via release of progesterone and estrogen for birth control is known to have side effects of vaginal discharge and bleeding.

If it persist beyond 2-3 days, immediately remove it at home and consult your obstetrician-gynecologist for further management guidelines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
