What Causes Brown Vaginal Spotting After Taking Plan B?

My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex. We pulled out early but we are worried about pre-cum. She took the plan b pill within 24 hours and got the regular side effects. 5 days later she woke up with blood and then a few hours later she had some brown spotting. What does this mean?

Hi,

Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill. After intake of pill, some may experience certain side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, spotting, low back pain, spotting or discharge, heaviness in breasts and headache.

The pill would prevent pregnancy by causing breakthrough bleeding like the periods within 5 to 10 days after the intake of the pill. Discharge of brown blood indicates the outflow of old or retained blood.

Kindly wait for actual bleeding to take place. If it doesn't happen even by 10 days, then you need to take urine pregnancy test and consult Obstetrician for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
