What Causes Brown Vaginal Spotting?

My period was scheduled to come September 17 2015. I started brown spotting September 12 through September 17. When the 17th came and my spotting turned reddish off and on. I m not sure if I even had a period this month. I ve done a pregnancy test and it was negative. Could you please tell me what this could be. And I don t take any birth control.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
After going through the history provided by you, the following could be the causes for your brown vaginal spotting:
1. Peri-menopause - known to cause a light brown discharge, pink, or a yellow discharge.
2. Implantation bleeding - an early sign of pregnancy. This type of discharge usually occurs 10 -14 days after conception, caused by the egg implanting itself to the uterine wall.
3. Previous endometrial tissues - A light brown discharge is common in young girls before they start their menstrual cycle and could be due to release of any previous endometrial tissue that was not shed during the menstrual cycle.
4. Atrophic vaginitis - which is accompanied by bleeding, pain or itching in the vaginal area with dry feeling in vagina and pain during intercourse.
5. Uterine/Endometrial polyps - generally causes discharge or bleeding after intercourse.
6. Sexually CTransmitted Diseases (STDs) - brown discharge could be caused due to chlamydia, trichomoniasis, gonorrhea and genital warts.
It would be advisable for you to consult Gynecologist and get examined by means of pelvic and per-speculum examination, which would lead to what could be the cause, that could be appropriately treated.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
