What Causes Brown Vaginal Spotting?

i have dark brown spotting that occurs occasionally, especially when i'm under stress or after orgasm. i have thyroid problems. i also have painful cycle. i had a pap smear recently and it appears normal. my gynae says my vaginal/uterine walls look alright and normal. i'm wondering if the spotting is linked to the thyroid problems /
