I had a surgical abortion yesterday and I haven t had blood or barely discharge. today when I went to the bathroom I went pee and wiped my bottom and on the toilet paper there was like a light brown yellowish film that came out. It wasn t blood or discharge it looked like skin or tissue from inside me it was thin and wrinkly and smelled absolutely awful. What was that? What s going on?

Hallow Dear,

During surgical abortion, the uterus is completely evacuated. After the procedure, there is some amount of the bleeding for a couple of days depending up on the uterine contractions. More strongly the uterus contracts, lesser is the bleeding. When the bleeding stops, there could be some serous discharge for a couple of days which does not smell foul.

You have found some yellowish tissue in the discharge. This could be some already separated piece of products of conception which did not come out during the surgical procedure; now it has got expelled out. Non-separated products in the uterine cavity would cause heavy bleeding. To set in any infection, usually it takes 48 hours exposure.

However, since you have mentioned that the piece was awfully smelling, you have to consider the possibility of infection of some remnant parts of products of conception in the uterine cavity. Please report to your Gynaecologist ASAP for appropriate diagnosis and the management. For infection you will have to take an antibiotics course; before that you have find out the cause of infection which in such events is usually incomplete abortion.

Ultrasonography will reveal whether your uterus is completely empty or not. If any more products are noted in the uterine cavity, you may require curetting of the uterine cavity under antibiotics umbrella.

If subsequently there is no more bleeding, nor any foul smelling discharge, you may ignore this incidence, only after reporting to the Gynaecologist.

I hope this helps you.
