What Causes Brownish Discharge During Menstruation?

i had a TL 4 months ago with very heavy periods for the first 3 months and this month i had brown spotting with a bunch of clearish pink discharge and it lasted for about 3 weeks with really what seems to me to not be a period what could be happening am i starting menopause?
