What Causes Brownish Discharge During Periods?

Doc, I am 36 years old ..not sexually active for two years now ..and i have noticed that i have a brownish liquidy discharge (alot) and its quite smelly..i can smell it without going to the toilet to check ....i have no soars, bruises, etc....it happens and stop from time to time...
