What Causes Brownish Vaginal Discharge?

my doctor just put me on metro gel for bv and the next day i started my period. my doctor told me to continue the metro gel. my period was dark and clotty. now that im off my period im now getting a dark brown thick gritty discharge. what could cause this? should i be concerned?
