What Causes Bruise And Lumps Along The Vein In The Elbow Post Surgery?

Hello. I had an operation 3 weeks ago, just a day case. A cannula was inserted into my wrist. For days after it was very sore and a hard lump....nothing I wasn t expecting. However now, three weeks later I have a bruise that has tracked along the vein up to my elbow and several lumps are under the skin along the bruise in my vein. I am aware this is superficial thrombosis, however do I need to be worried or get it looked at? It has been 3 weeks since the surgery.

Hi,

It is always a good idea to get any new symptoms checked out by a medical professional, especially if they are persistent or concerning. The bruise and lumps along the vein could be a sign of superficial thrombophlebitis, which is a condition where a blood clot forms in a vein just below the surface of the skin. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and redness along the affected vein.

In some cases, the blood clot can travel to a deeper vein and cause a more serious condition called deep vein thrombosis. It is important to seek medical attention if you have any symptoms of thrombophlebitis, as your doctor may recommend treatment to prevent complications. Treatment may include compression stockings, blood thinners, or other medications.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

It is important to have any concerning symptoms post-surgery evaluated by a healthcare professional, especially if they are new or worsening. Superficial thrombosis, or inflammation of the veins close to the surface of the skin, can occur after a surgical procedure or with the use of a cannula. While it is usually not serious, it can sometimes be a sign of a more significant issue, such as a blood clot or infection. It is recommended that you contact your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and receive appropriate evaluation and treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
