What Causes Bruise On Toe After Hitting To A Hard Object?

i knocked my toe against a hard object yesterday. it's now swollen and bruised black and blue and the bruises have spread to the base of the affected toe. there is a pretty big blood clot below the toe nail as well. i can still walk but try not to place pressure on the affected toe as it is somewhat painful. is my toe broken or just bruised?
