What Causes Bruising Of Cuticle With Painful Thumb?

34, 54kg, 160cm, healthy. Have had a black splinter type line on left thumb since about 15yrs old. From cuticle to the beginning of the white bit of nail. About 2 weeks ago after heavy pruning garden noticed thumb was sore and aching around the area where the line is, towards the left of nail. Black line has now turned to a bruised type line and noticed at base of nail a purple small bruise is there about size of a small pin head, thumb still aches and pains down that side to the knuckle bone and skin sometimes looks red around the bruised area near the cuticle with feeling of the thumb being "hot". Should I get a second opinion from another GP. Thanks so much, Aussie Mum.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the symptoms of white ball like growth near the cuticle of nail along with soreness and pain and bruising seems to be due to infection in the area of skin near the nail and occurs commonly due to causes like bacterial or fungal infection..
This condition is known as PARONYCHIA..

It can occur due to conditions like traumatic injury to the side of the nail like while washing clothes or dishwashing, injury while cutting nail, nail biting habit etc, overzealous manicure etc..

The white lump seems to be most probably due to formation of a pus filled abscess..
I would therefore suggest you to consult a General Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation is generally sufficient for diagnosis..

You can be advised to apply a combination of steroid, antibiotic and antifungal ointment over it..
If it is painful topical application of numbing ointment and taking anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen can help..
Do cool compresses over it..
If the lump is large and painful Incision and drainage followed by a course of antibiotics and painkillers will relieve..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
