What Causes Bump On The Jawline?

Hi there I ve had a bump along my jawline for well over a year now maybe even two years. I d say its about the size of a pea, initially when I discovered it my Primary thought it might be associated with my impacted wisdom teeth and sent me to a Maxillofacial Surgeon, he did a panoramic xray and said it looked like a cyst and he didn t recommend that I get it biopsied because of how close to the facial nerve it was located. He said I could end up with a cock-eyed smile if he hit that nerve, I declined to have the biopsy done. The bump never hurts but it feels like it is directly on the bone on the right side of my jaw. Aside from that for years now I have this intermittent pain that feels like its coming right from my collarbone sometimes when I take a breath in it hurts even more the pain comes and goes sometimes it can last for a few hours to days and then I might not experience it again for a couple of months I ve never had this looked at, but now for the last few months every time I have even a sip of alcohol I feel this intense burning in the bottom of my throat/chest area after about one drink it goes away and only lasts for about 5/10 minutes.......the most recent thing I ve experienced is a faint feeling....Just about 1 month ago it started and has happened 2 times since, I start to feel extremely overheated then nauseous like I m going to throw up and even lose control of my bowels and then I can t see anything hear it feels like I m going to die or pass out. This has only happened to me one other time and it was when I was pregnant (12 years ago) so I attributed it to that at the time. There is no chance I m pregnant now, I m really nervous a friend of my fiances just was diagnosed with NHL and I just happened to be reading up on it...when I came across an article on a symptom of NHL as being the pain associated with drinking alcohol it started making me think of all these strange things that have been going on and is starting to scare me. I used to be a heavy smoker over a year ago but have since quit and use and electronic cigarette now. I m only 30 years old and have no other medical conditions, do you have any answers to any of these symptoms and do you think any of them are related??

Hello,

I can understand your concern. For the lump on the jaw line, if you had the first check up about 2 years ago when you first found its presence, I would suggest that this is time you should go for another consultation with the maxillofacial surgeon and another round of investigations and it is possible that the cyst might have grown in size in two years and not might be pressing on the facial nerve which as nearest to it causing pain in collar bone and increasing episodes of pain. If the lesion is indeed growing in size and damaging facial nerve, there will be symptoms of facial nerve damage if you go for biopsy or not. The advise can be given after having follow up x-ray, CT Scan and comparing it with the previous one.

As we do not know the type of cyst or tumor you are having, it is difficult to advise if the burning while alcohol consumption or fainting feelings are related or part of a different physical condition. It can be said after biopsy of the tumor/cyst and knowing the nature of it.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
