What Causes Bump On The Top Of The Tongue?

I took my six year old daughter to her pediatrician this morning--he called an ear nose throat doctor regarding a bump she has on the top of her tongue--they think it may be a lingular (??) thryoid? I can t remember the term he used....anyway, she has an appointment with the ent thursday morning. I am just feeling very worried.

Hi,

It is suggestive of lingual thyroid. Based on the history your daughter seems to have ectopic (abnormal location) thyroid tissue on the base of her tongue. She needs certain lab tests such as thyroid function tests to detect any thyroid disease. There is nothing to worry. If your daughter is having difficulty in swallowing or change of voice or difficulty in breathing she may be advised surgery to cure this condition.
