What Causes Burning Pain After Having Intravenous Therapy?
My daughter was receiving iv contrast for a ct scan and the pressure build up so much her vein popped, she has been in severe pain. She said she feels sharp needle pain accompanied by tinkling and burning, is this normal? What are the dangerous and risk?
If the contrast used for CT scan leaks from the IV and into the tissues of the hand or arm, it can cause pain and inflammation. Generally the contrast agents are mild and the symptoms are temporary in nature. There may be pain or burning at the injection site, minor skin rash, mild headaches and nausea. Typically these side effects do not require any treatments. So do not worry. Temporarily you can take some pain killers like ibuprofen or according to your doctor's advice. Take care.
