What Causes Burning Sensation And Urinary Incontinence In The Elderly?

I am inquiring for my 82 year old mother. She has had incontinence issues in the past and regularly wears depends and pads. This is different this time. She has a good bit of burning when she tries to urinate, yet, she has no infection. Also, she doesn t just leak, she gushes. It is similar to when your water breaks while you are standing. She has been timing her urinary trips, going to the bathroom every 30-45 mins. She has to force urination and the burning is almost unbearable for her. then, she may stand up and the urine gushes out, flooding the floor, her clothes, etc. She has been seem by a urologist and they seems to think it is her age. The Doctor did a pelvic exam and indicated that her keegle muscles were not working very well. She is to have some sort of test, cystocy???, but they cannot do this test until October 4th! Everything I read states that you may have leakage; however, nothing talks about GUSHING and about pain when trying to urinate. What can I do to help her? She is so deserving of a better quality of life and she really can t leave the house now.

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern.

1. Lower Urinary Tract symptoms [LUTS] is common in old age, and possible reason could be:
. urinary tract infection [check with urine examination]
. urge/stress incontinence [detrusor muscle instability]
. unchecked diabetes [check with blood sugar]
. neurological condition [like multiple sclerosis can cause LUTS]
. certain medications like anti depressants, diuretics, and lithium tablets can also produce similar symptoms.

2. One may check with an Urologist [as already did], who must have done the urodynamic studies and then inferred it to be kegel muscle weakness.

3. avoid caffeine containing drinks
. for overactive/stress bladder there are pelvic floor exercises
. avoid smoking, loose weight if overweight
. medicines called anticholinergics [oxybutynin] are advised which relaxes the bladder and increases its capacity or Hormone Replacement Therapy [HRT] can be given
. If she has cognitive impairment prompt and timed toilet training is must.
