What Causes Burning Sensation In Inner Surface Of Lower Lip?

Hi, Dr. Andrew. For the past few days I have had a soreness/burning sensation on the piece of skin that connects my bottom lip to my bottom gum. It s not a canker sore as far as I can tell, there s just tenderness and burning. Thank you for your help!

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems that the piece of skin which you are talking about is the LOWER LABIAL FRENULUM and as it is a soft and small structure any injury to it can cause soreness and discomfort..

Soreness of the frenulum can occur due to injury caused by any hard food like a hard potato wafer or something else which can hurt the frenulum causing inflammation and leading to soreness..

At times due to excessive stretching of the lower as in case of any dental treatment of for some other reason can also traumatize the frenulum..

In case of vigorous brushing if the brush hurts the frenulum there can be soreness..

The soreness can subside itself in a few days but precautions should be taken not to cause continuous hurting as in case of soreness one tend to touch it again and again with the tongue which does not let it heal..

You need not to worry and can suck on ice pops and cold water for relief..

Take care while brushing and eating not to hurt that area..

You can apply steroid based cream over it to reduce inflammation..

Gargle with antimicrobial mouthwashes for relief..

You can apply numbing gel over it to relieve pain and burning..

Hope this information helps..
