What Causes Burning Sensation In The Throat Along With Diarrhea?

I HAVE BEEN HAVING A BURNING IN THE BACK OF MY THROAT AND DIARRHEA. I an 76 (& 3/4) and have had a hysterectomy, my tonsils, adenoids, and appendix removed. I have arthritis and take the following medications: Hydrocodone/acetamophen 7.5.325 (1/2 tablet every 6 hours), Verapamil ER, 120 MG, 1 daily, Levothyrovine,0.075MG,1 daily, Buprophen 1 daily w/o food for at least 1/2 hour in AM. Could this be caused by dairy products? I do drink a couple of diet cokes (usually daily) as I do NOT drink coffee. PLEASE tell me it is not my gallbladder as I do NOT wish to have more surgery at my age. Thanks in advance...

Hello,

Don't worry, your symptoms of burning in the throat and diarrhea do not seem related to gallbladder or something that will require surgery.

If the symptoms are there for less then a week, very likely you are having a viral infection. Viruses can cause burning or pain in the throat and also diarrhea and some other symptoms as well like fever, tiredness, nausea, cough, skin rash, etc. Not always a patient has all of them but might have some of these symptoms as it is happening in your case.

I would say you need to take oral rehydration solutions to substitute the lost water and electrolytes with diarrhea so you start to feel a lot better. Drugs for diarrhea are not recommended to be used routinely but if you have diarrhea for more than 4-5 times a day and have no fever or blood with stools you can use Loperamide to ease diarrhea.

As for the throat, you can take some Strepsils to help quiet it down and also some Omeprazole in case acid reflux causes the burning sensation.

If your symptoms are for longer than a week or you notice any worsening you will need to see your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
