What Causes Burning Sensation In Throat After Eating Pan Masala?

Hi I am Roy, I swallowed a bit of pan masala(420 in India) yesterday night unknowingly during a marriage reception thinking that it is meetha pan(sweet pan) which supposedly helps in digestion as heard from elederly people. Once I had my 2nd bite and I swalloed a bit of its juice, i started getting a burning sensation around my neck as well as the food pipe area and I was feeling dizziness/giddiness as well as swaeting abnormally. I spit out and gargled with cold water tried the same for sometime. My friend came with me to drop back to my home, took a cold shower because of the burning feeling around my neck. Now, while in my office, again I am getting that burning sensation in my food pipe as well as in my neck. Please guide me with remedy and steps that I should take so that I can get the acid contents out of my body.

Hi,

Pan masala contains slaked lime, areca nut, with or without tobacco and some other ingredients. Lime, areca nut, betel nut may cause gastritis which is the cause for burning sensation of stomach and oesophagus. Since you were taken that only once, it will subside soon. Antacids helps overcome the chest discomfort and stomach discomfort.

Take some proton pump inhibitors such as Pantoprazole or Omeprazole. Avoid fast food, spicy, high fatty and oily foods to prevent acidity. Hot and cold beverages should also be avoided. More caffeine also induce gastritis. Balanced diet with enough carbohydrate, fat and protein with micro-nutrients helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
