What Causes Burning Smell In Urine After Suffering From UTI?

OK My mother, age 94 .. has dark flecks in her incontinent depends, and the urine smells like something burning. This is different from a fishy smell. She is not in pain, but is very weak. has had UTI s for past 6 years, is antibiotic intolerant. We are wondering if we should take her back in to the infectious disease specialist? We don t know how much longer we will have her with us. If these symptoms are serious or not. In the past we have taken her in for antibiotic IV s which give her a few more weeks of quality of life. But oral antibiotics leave her unable to move .. she becomes so weak.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Granny seems most likely to have recurrent urinary tract infection, which can be bacterial or fungal ( as there is fishy smell, Trichomonas
is most striking possibility ). As there are problems with many of the antibiotics, I would request to undertake a culture swab of the vaginal area and treat accordingly only so that she has fast speedy recovery without side effects to best possible manner. Till that time, manage at home about:
- Adequate hydration
- Vaginal hygiene with antiseptic liquid
- Cloths care if there is incontinence
- Control of blood sugar
- Discuss need of indwelling catheter with her doc

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
