What Causes Butterfly Sensation In Pelvic Region During Periods?

Whenever I have my period, I have this very strong "butterfly" sensation in my pelvic region. In the first three to four days the feeling is almost unbearable, but after that it goes away. It sometimes helps when I take Motrin, but only a little. What can I do to get rid of this terrible discomfort?
