What Causes Catching Sensation In Knee?

Whenever I bend my knees and try to get back up I get this oddly weird "catching" sensation that occurs mostly in my left knee, but it disappears after getting back down and trying to get back up again. Sometimes this happens in my right knee, too, which I had surgery on three years ago, almost. So what's up with my knees?
