What Causes Chest Infection After Back Surgery?

My 81 year old father had back surgery yesterday. This morning he was difficult to arouse, so the nurses called in the respiratory therapist. He is coughing up dark brown mucous when he coughs. His face is flushed. Is it possible he aspirated during surgery. They have done a CT of his chest but no results yet.
