Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am couching so hard the muscles in my upper chest hurt and my arms went numb. I have never experienced this before. I have been fighting off a cold for 6 days. It was really bad on days 4 and 5. I feel better for the most part today if I keep Alka-seltzer Cold meds on board......But this cough!
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Vigorous coughing can cause strain on your intercostal muscle (small group of muscles between your rib cage) and can cause pain. This is an absolutely harmless thing and will resolve soon. If pain is severe, you can take analgesics like Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. You can take expectorant cough syrups for relief. If cough is productive with thick sputum, better to start antibiotics.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
