What Causes Chest Pain After Insertion Of Cardiac Stents?
Respected Sir, My father (Sh R P Vasudeva) had undergone through an angiography and angioplasty at IGMC Shimla, on 21st February, 2017. Two stents were implanted due to the blockage in two arteries (80% and 68%). However, after the stent placement, my father has been experiencing pain inside his chest after walking or exertion. The pain disappears after having rest. He has been facing this problem since the placement of stents. He had also visited the concerned doctor twice to discuss this problem, after a week and after a month of stent placement, but you said that I could be due to some other reasons. I would be most grateful if you could offer some advice regarding this matter.
I have just read your query, chest pain following coronary intervention occurs in a few cases. Since the character of the pain is "increasing on exertion and relieved on rest" more favours towards arterial spasm. Lets see what are the main causes of the chest pain following coronary intervention. We can classify them into:
1) Cardiac origin and
2) Non-cardiac origin.
1)Cardiac origin. In case of a cardiac pain, it could be predominantly due to:
-Acute coronary artery closure.
- Coronary vasospasm.
- A new infarction.
In your father's case, he experiences the pain only during exertion, as per my opinion this pain could be due to stretching of the arterial wall by the stent. It happens especially during exertion where his heart has to pump more blood and more faster for the muscles that are working out. For further clarification you can consult with your Doctor he may prescribe some medications which will ease his pain.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
