What Causes Chest Pain After Recovering From Pericarditis?

Hi I was diagnosed with pericarditis in september 09 after being given thrombolysis ( excuse spelling!) and being told I was having the second heart attack of the night. I have subsequently had long term pain which can vary in type and severity. There was some effusion and I still have some shortness of breadth at times though all subsequent ecg s, echo s and CT scan have apparently been ok until recently when I had an ECG ( as part of a seperate pre-op assessment ) which caused some concern and raised a question for the last cardiologist as to my suitability for surgery at the moment. I am still waiting to hear!! But today have suffered a lot more pain than I have had in such along time that I really am concerned. Can pericarditis really last this long?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern and would explain that pericarditis can lead to prolonged chest pain.

but, I would recommend performing a cardiac ultrasound, inflammation tests (complete blood count, PCR, ESR), a resting ECG and cardiac enzymes.

An exercise cardiac stress test or stress echo may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka,
Cardiologist
