Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I smoked about 3 quarters of a pack of cigarettes for a model shoot and when i got home my chest was hurting. I never smoke cigarettes but i have smoked marijuana in the past. The pain only lasted about 5 mins or less. Was there any serious problems that can occur from this?
Understanding your concern. As per your query yes chest pain could be after smoking cigarettes if don't have any underlying medical condition. Cigarette has the effect of constricting blood vessels and causing fast heart beating. Blood vessel contraction can itself cause chest pain.In your case you have high sensitivity to nicotine, so you have symptoms even from little amounts. Nicotine activates adrenal medulla and leads to release of adrenaline which causes activation of sensory nerve endings and increase heart beat and pain. Even Marijuana which you had in past has similar effects.
So I would advise you not to smoke.I recommend you to perform a resting ECG and routine blood test, kidney and liver function tests, blood electrolytes, and a chest x ray to exclude other causes. Try to switch on nicotine patches first and then completely quit.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
