What Causes Chest Pain After Swallowing Hot Food?

I microwaved some food yesterday and when I took a bite it was extremely hot. My throat initially hurt but subsided and I was ok all day. Today I have been having pain in my chest when I swallow food or liquids and am having a cough. Did I burn my esophagus and will it heal on its own? Or should I see a doctor?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From your description ,i deduct that you may have a Esophageal thermal injury that is caused by ingestion of extremely hot food.

In these circumstances,my suggestion is to consult physically a local gastroenterologist because you may need a EGD test(esophagogastroduodenoscopy) to examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum for potential thermal esophageal and gastric damage due to ingestion of hot food.

My second advice is to start a clear liquid diet only and to discuss with your treating doctor if you need an acid blockers therapy.

Very probably ,your symptoms will resolve soon and the burn on your esophagus will heal on its own but i insist that you should see your local doctor without delay.

Hope this is helpful.
