What Causes Chest Pain And Choking After Eating?

Hi...I was just eating dinner and a grain of rice got caught down the wrong part in my throat. I was coughing so hard, I had to hold my breasts because my chest hurt so bad like pins and needles or equivalent to electric shocks! The coughing has stopped now and I just feel like I m having ghost pains...what happened?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.

The human body has numerous defense mechanisms to keep the airway free and clear of extraneous matter. The rise grain has passed to the airway tract and provoked cough reflex in order to prevent airway obstruction. The most common symptoms of foreign-body aspiration are coughing, choking, and wheezing, stridor, chest pain, and throat or sternal discomfort. These symptoms are normal, due to the forced coughing reflex you had.

Hope I helped with my answer.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
