Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Chest Pain And Palpitations With The History Of Mitral Valve Prolapse?
I have a variety of things going on all of a sudden....shortness of breath, chest pain, achy muscles, abdominal issues, pounding heartbeat. I have a history of IBS, fibromyalgia and mitral valve prolapse but the symptoms have never been so pronounced before.
It would have been better if you have mentioned your age along with the history. The mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is known to cause palpitations and irregularities in heart rhythm. MVP will cause your left atrium to enlarge which in turn can increase the back pressures in your lungs which results in shortness of breath.
As you are symptomatic your valve repair / replacement needs to be done. MVP has only 2% chances for complications. If symptoms are there there are more chances for developing complications. The complications arising out of MVP can be fatal like sudden cardiac arrest or a stroke. Hence, consult a cardiologist and get evaluated.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Meera Rajeev, Anesthesiologist
