Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Chest Pain While Having Mitral Valve Prolapse?
I am having pain on the right side of my chest. Sometimes sharp but not constant. Sometimes I am sitting down or sitting up when the pain occurs. Sometimes, I am working. I have been diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse in 1985. I am a 49yr old African American female.
Mitral valve prolapse is a very common finding in heart ultrasound and most of the patients have no problem with it. This is the case especially if the amount of regurgitation (blood going back from the ventricle to the atria- heart rooms) is not a lot. If the chest pain is sharp in nature and happens when you are in rest very likely it is not from the heart.
On the other hand because you have had heart prolapse in ultrasound previously it would be a good idea to repeat the heart ultrasound to check it again and see how much is the regurgitation and if changes to the heart are happening or not.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
