What Causes Chest Pain While Suffering From Hiatal Hernia?

Hello, I am a 57 year old female who was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia about 4 years ago. ( I am currently on prescription meds for acid reflex, which for the most part, is kept under control) After a long busy stressful day, I experienced some painful intense symptoms in my chest, (like intense heartburn) which radiated up into my neck, jaw and ears all at the same time. I was not sure if I was experiencing extreme heartburn, an ear infection, vertebrae out of alignment, or an issue with a tooth. I blamed it on stress. The discomfort varied for about 8 hours up until I went to bed. When I woke up this morning, the symptoms were gone. What is concerning to me, is that the exact intense symptoms just returned around 2:00 today and lasted about 2 hours. I am wondering if this is from my hiatal hernia or could it be something else of greater concern. Thanks, Theresa in Montana

Hello,

Since you are above 50 years of age, we should definitely rule out heart diseases for your symptoms. So first get done blood pressure monitoring, ECG, 2D echo and stress test (trade mill test). If all these are normal then no need to worry for heart diseases. Stress can worsen acid reflux and this in turn causes central chest pain. So avoid stress and tension, be relax and calm. Continue treatment of acid reflux. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
