What Causes Chest Pain With Breathlessness And Heart Palpitations?

My 19 year old son recently got bitten by an insect and developed a very large, red and raised swollen area around the bite. He has been having chest pain and has been out of breath climbing the stairs to our apartment. During this last episode we put an oximeter on his finger and saw that his heartbeat was very rapid and also erratic. He also has pain in his legs. I took him to the doctor, but the doctor didn t do anything (take any blood tests, etc.) and said my son was fine. Is he really?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

For this reason, I recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound- a chest X ray study
- complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation
- kidney and liver function tests
- Lyme disease antibodies
- other tick borne diseases antibodies. You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

If this was the emergency, then the doctor must have paid the attention. So it is nothing to worry. It can be an insect bite that developed into the lesion.
To confirm EKG is the option. Abnormal heart beat has to be observed by cardiologist, so no need to worry about this. Just have patience and it will be fine soon.

Hope I have answered your query.
