What Causes Chills And Tremors In The Body After Consuming Alcohol?

My husband had a few too many drinks tonight at home. After dinner fell asleep in chair, woke up and went to bed. Heard him moaning, thought maybe he is getting sick. Has severe chills he cannot get warm. No temperature, just shaking uncontrollably. He is trying to quiet down.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

This could be delirium tremens. This happens when the body, that is used to too much alcohol, tries to adjust to the normal state.
Another possibility is he could be falling sick.

I recommend :
-check his temperature and blood sugar if possible.
-blood tests (complete blood count, thiamine levels, liver function tests)
-if he develops altered sensorium, confusion, breathing difficulty, water retention in ankles, excessive fatigue, muscle weakness, see a doctor right away to check for beriberi. This can become life threatening and needs to be treated right away.

He should not drink on am empty stomach and limit drinks to one a day.
If he has a fever/flu, rest, Hydration and symptomatic relief will help him recover in 7-10 days.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.
Wish you good health
