Hi Dr. Rynne: Symptoms: Severe chills last Sunday eve (12/28) with 101 temp. Temp went down & has not been back. Sore throat under tongue area & neck for 8 days. Mild dry cough. Went to Dr. on Friday 1/2 - negative strep, negative influenza. This evening I notices a swelling in my gum under my tongue. it is hard, like the bone. Not red. still have bad sore throat & have not turned the corner on this. Is this swelling serious? Thanks! - Sharon
Hi. Thanks for your query. Fever with chills indicate a sever infection, supported by your history of sore under the tongue and neck area for 8 days. Your investigations show negative strep throat and negative influenza. The swelling under the tongue near the gum is indicative of an abscess. This can be a serious thing. I would advise you to consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, to get investigations of the blood to see for evidence of infection, and get one CT scan done to see the reason for this swelling And get started with broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines and supportive treatment. You may need a Surgery if the abscess has already developed.
I hope this answers your query and helps you to get and early diagnosis and proper treatment.
