What Causes Chocking Sensation In The Chest Despite On Famotidine For Acid Reflux?

My mother has been suffering from acid reflux. She constantly complains of having a choking feeling in her chest area and her stomach feels weak & empty. Could one or the following medicines be a contributor to her acid reflux? Levothyroxine, Lovastatin, Nifedipine ER, Furosemide, Diltiazem. She is currently taking Famotidine & Sucralfate to help with the acid reflux issue, but nothing seems to be working. She feels good one minute and the next she is in discomfort. Please help!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be due to severe gastritis secondary to acid reflux.

You can switch to PPI drugs like omeprazole or pantoprazole for symptomatic relief.

Avoid spicy foods also.

If symptoms persist better to consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated. In severe cases, you might require an endoscopy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
