What Causes Choking Feeling In Throat?

I have a constant chocking feeling in the back of my throat and I am about to have surgery on c-6 c-7 fused. I am in constant pain which increasing daily. my age is 52 and I am a male and weigh 210 pounds. what could this chocking feeling be from and is it something I need to be concerned with?
