What Causes Chronic Constipation While On A Mediterranean Diet?

Hello. I have recently changed my diet (about 6 months ago) and have been experiencing extreme constipation from time to time. I have high cholesterol so I have switched to a Mediterranean diet. I have tried systematically eliminating certain foods from my diet to see if it was one thing in particular, but I still don t have an answer. For whatever reason it seems to align with my menstrual cycle. Could it be hormonal?

Hello,

Constipation is a condition in which there is difficulty in emptying bowels. There are many causes for constipation.

Mediterranean diet might not be the cause for constipation. Sometimes, there will be different causes (hypothyroidism, IBS, poor GIT motility et cetera) for constipation.

So, you have to go for the following investigations:
1. Ultrasound abdomen
2. Colonoscopy
3. Thyroid profile
4. Gastric function tests

For constipation, you can follow the below things which would definitely help:
1. Develop more intake of water
2. Consume extra fiber and enzymes (fresh fruits and vegetables)
3. Avoid sedentary life style
4. Try colon irrigation or massage therapy
5. Avoid using laxatives

For backache, identify the cause and start using Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
