Hi. There are several causes of chronic constipation. First is diet. Not getting enough fiber or drinking enough fluids can make it difficult to pass stool. If you are taking narcotic pain medications, this can dramatically impede bowel function. Irritable bowel syndrome can also present as chronic constipation known as IBS-C. Physical inactivity or sedentary lifestyle can do it as well. Diabetics can develop autonomic dysfunction or problems w the nerves that innervate the bowel that can cause constipation. Hope this helps.
